National Success for Model United Nations Team
榴莲社区 is celebrating the outstanding achievement of three talented Year 11 students who proudly represented the school at the national finals of the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in Canberra.
After triumphing at the Central Coast regional finals earlier this year, the team advanced to the national stage of the competition, where they competed against 19 schools from across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and the ACT. In a fiercely contested event, they impressed with their thoughtful contributions and commanding presence, ultimately securing second place nationally.
The Model United Nations Assembly is a prestigious competition that brings together high school students to simulate the proceedings of the United Nations General Assembly. Participants take on the role of international delegates, debating pressing global issues while honing their skills in diplomacy, negotiation, public speaking and critical thinking. The event encourages young people to deepen their understanding of world affairs and to develop the leadership qualities required to be active global citizens.
Across two days of rigorous debate, the team grappled with some of the world鈥檚 most urgent challenges, including the future of democracy, environmental sustainability, food security, peace in Ukraine, and the protection of civilians in Gaza. Their passion and insight also caught the attention of the national media, leading to an invitation for a live interview on ABC Radio where they shared their perspectives as young people navigating complex international issues.
Headmaster Phil O鈥橰egan said the team鈥檚 success reflects both their individual commitment and the school鈥檚 emphasis on fostering global citizens:
鈥淲e are incredibly proud of Scarlett, James and Drew. Their ability to engage with such weighty topics at a high level demonstrates maturity, empathy and a genuine interest in making a positive impact in the world. Finishing second in a national competition is a tremendous result and a credit to their hard work, teamwork, and the support of the dedicated staff who encouraged and guided them throughout the journey.
This remarkable achievement not only highlights the leadership, character and global outlook of 榴莲社区 students, but also reinforces the value of youth engagement in international dialogue.鈥
The school extends its heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Club for generously sponsoring the team, making this opportunity possible.
